The genealogical index which follows was compiled (and is copyright 2000 by Gordon Johnson) initially as a means of improving personal access to the first published volume of "Extracts from the Records of the Burgh of Glasgow", for the years 1573-1642. The original book index had clearly been compiled primarily as a subject index, with only a few important names included, which is woefully inadequately nowadays, when EVERYONE is of interest and not just those in the top strata of society. Having as my main requirement the genealogical interest, the indexing terms used for this name index were expanded further to indicate any relationship and any description given in the text, such as someone being a leper (suffering from leprosy) or being an Englishman. Where two persons are mentioned in one index entry, another entry has been made under the second person so that no-one should be missed in the alphabetical sequence. Where one person is mentioned in two or more items on the one page, appended to the page number I have put in brackets the number of mentions, e.g. 301(2) to indicate two mentions of the person on page 301. A repetition of the name within the one item is ignored. In early texts such us this, many individuals are referred to on different occasions in a different way. In one case a person may be called as merchant, later a merchant and baillie, or simply baillie. With the frequent appearance of exactly the same name but a different occupation, it is obvious that there can be more than one person of the same name. Noting that difficulty, a decision was made to make separate entries for each name which had a different designation, so that confusion between persons is not caused by the index. John X, merchant, may be the same as John X, baillie, but might also later be a son of the same name. I leave the user to re-examine the text, or other sources of the period, to make their own determination of that. Next, spelling of names: spelling not being standardised until more recent dates, a clerk simply wrote what a name sounded like, and different clerks could use different spellings for the same personal name. The text often has the same name spelled many ways, and in some cases the intended name is not clear. This is specially noticeable in the case of John Bornis/ Bornes/ which I first thought was a version of Burns, but later appears written also as Barnes, causing me to leave the matter unresolved. In such cases, one or more versions may be entered by me, with a SEE ALSO reference to let you consider the other versions. Other names were completely new to me, despite my fairly good knowledge of Scottish surnames. The names were either lost over the years, or changed out of all recognition (taking a well-known example of a placename, the present-day town of Stirling was originally written as Striveling!). In the case of such unknown surnames, they have been left as written. Where the modern version of a surname is a standard one, I have used the modern version in the index, with a SEE reference in a few cases which might be misunderstood. I have also included names of ships mentioned, as these can be useful information in some family connections. The name of the ship, and port or country it is from, are given. If the owner/captain's name is stated, his name is also indexed. Royalty and nobles are mentioned in various formats, and are indexed
that way. Designations in the volume are in lower case throughout, and
the index does the same. The Earl of Lennox will appear under Lennox, earl
of, but will also appear under his personal name on other occasions if
that is the way the record has him. Kings appear solely under the one personal
name, e.g. Alexander, king. An ordinary individual who was named Alexander
King will be indexed as King, Alexander.
Copy ServiceShould anyone have trouble gaining access to the indexed volume, I am willing to photocopy pages as required if you quote me the index entries. The photocopies will be placed in clear plastic sleeves for protection, and sent in fully sealed brown manilla envelopes. You will be charged for this at the following rate:
PLUS 5 pounds (GB pounds) per envelope of up to 15 sheets to cover airmail post and packing and my time for this. Charges liable to be increased if postal or other costs increase. The above scale of charges relate solely to copying material which is fully identified. Anyone requiring names or other information to be searched for in a vast range of Scottish historical source material should refer to my KinHelp pages, where my research fees are quoted, with a minimum fee of 50 pounds. PAYMENT is by check/cheque in pounds sterling OR British (Scottish or English) currency, minimum payment is 5 pounds. Contact me by using the form on the "Contact Me" tabOr by post to :
