Genealogical Index to "Book of Perth"

Points to note about "The Book of Perth" index:

Some of the names of burgesses which appear in this book, taken from original sources, are people who do NOT appear in the published list of burgesses (The Perth Guildry Book, 1354-1601, ed. by Marion L. Stavert; Scottish Record Society, 1993), so this index supplements that book.

Secondly, for various reasons, a few surnames which are found here are NOT in Black's The Surnames of Scotland. This may be in part due to a mishearing of the clerk or scribe writing the names, but some names seem to be purely local to Perthshire. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with such unusual surnames.

The word "cautioner" will be found attached to some names. A cautioner [pronounced Kay-shone-er] was a guarantor that another person would either appear at the next hearing, or the cautioner would pay a penalty. The term was used both in ecclesiastical and civil cases.

Another descriptor is "elder". In the context of this index, the word means an elder of the local church. None of the entries here mean an older person of the same name.

The word "servitor" is simply an old-style word meaning an employee, in the context of servant, but can indicate any kind of status within the employee category. Where such a person is named, it often indicated a person in a higher capacity than mere menial.

A number of individuals appear, as found, under a forename rather than a surname. This was common among the nobility and the clergy, and you will find the same person under a forename, under a surname, and often under a title (e.g. Innernytie, laird of)

The posts of prior and sub-prior were elective positions within a monastery, and so a monk could be the prior one year and sub-prior at a later date. At the Reformation, clergy were assumed into the Reformed church and as such were permitted to marry, and examples are to be found in this index.

Occupations are explained where the term is no longer current (e.g. baxter = baker). A flesher is a term still in use by some butchers.

Dashes will be found where a name is not found in the text of the book; but where identifiable, I have inserted the missing forename in square brackets, to permit clearer recognition of the person.
