The book:

The 1969 publication provided a printed transcription of the second part of the manuscript Court Book of Selkirk, which is one of the earliest surviving documents detailing life in a Scottish burgh, and includes several population lists compiled for tax or military service reasons. The work was published in two parts, of which this is the second, but no index was compiled for it.

I have had to accept that the printed version is true and accurate, but poor handwriting can lead to misunderstanding of part of a text; the transcribers realised this and in some cases suggested a variant reading. For some of these, the original writer probably wrote the wrong name at the time, and the transcriber has where possible suggested the correct name. I have accepted these amendments.

Indexing this work was much more complicated than most other indexes/indices, due to the period in which it was written. The writer of this court book wrote a combination of Latin and the local version of English, sometimes using both in one paragraph!

I have translated from the Latin for the purposes of descriptive indexing. Names remain as found.

The clerk of the time spelled names in an amazing variety of ways, particularly forenames which might appear in their Latin or English forms, and in either the full standard version or in his spelling of the “pet” or short form. The forename William appeared as Wil, Will, Woll, Wolle, Willelmus, Willelmi, Wollyem, Willyem, Williem, William, to give just one example.

My decision on how to construct the index was to show every variation in spelling, with page numbers for each variant. This would allow any name researcher to pursue the frequency and date distribution of particular variants , and would also be instructive for those less informed about spelling variations.

For those who have not encountered certain variant spellings of a surname, I have inserted references to the local spelling of the name; by a SEE reference where today's spelling does not appear at all, and as a SEE ALSO reference where other spellings appear in addition to the normally expected one. I have also in a few instances referred from an unusual local spelling to the normal version.

You will also encounter some surnames which are extremely localised and so are very rare; and in some cases not even found in Black's “The Surnames of Scotland”, or are, unusually, examples earlier than those noted by Black.

I have endeavoured to be accurate in transcribing names and page numbers, but I shall be happy to make corrections if errors are pointed out to me. I have decided that more than one instance of a particular name in a page merits a single mention of that page number, so please check the entire page for second or third mentions. This has simplified the indexing.

As always, the index is free to use, but if copied then my copyright should be acknowledged. Requests for page copies from the Court Book for particular names can be done at a small fee per page, plus postal cost. Alternatively, scans can be provided at the same rate.
